About Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is a prestigious American Grade I stakes race held yearly in June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The race is the third leg of the Triple Crown, following five weeks after the Kentucky Derby, and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes. It is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old colts and geldings. The Belmont Stakes is called the "Run for the Carnations" because of the blanket of white carnations that are draped over the winner's neck. More ...

Morning after interview at Belmont with trainer Tim Ice

Tim Ice, 34, just opened his own stable last summer, and is going to the Kentucky Derby (G1) in his first year as a trainer. Ice learned his craft by serving as an assistant to several well-known trainers for the past 10 years, working for Keith Desormeaux, Cole Norman and Morris Nicks. "I wanted to have a thorough knowledge of the job and sufficient backing before venturing out on my own," Ice told the Oaklawn Park press office. Summer Bird is his stable star. "That colt has a lot of ability, will run long and is still learning," he said in advance of the Arkansas Derby (G2). "The nice thing about Summer Bird is that he can run his last quarter in :24 and change. Old time racing men have claimed for years that a three-year-old who can finish up like that, is a Derby horse." Ice scored his first stakes victory as a trainer in the March 28 Rainbow Miss S. at Oaklawn, courtesy of Affirmed Truth. A native of East Liverpool, Ohio, he currently resides in Bossier City, Louisiana. "I first went to the track when I was 13, with my stepfather Frank Rapp," Ice said. "He took me to Waterford Park (now Mountaineer in Chester, West Virginia) where he trained a couple of horses. Not long after that, we moved to Louisiana where I grew up near Louisiana Downs."
