I called the herd for their morning meal.
He didn't come and the fear in my heart was immediately real.

He was always there, the head of the herd.
The other horses didn't come for the grain that was offered.
Those equines had a look in their eyes that something was wrong.
I knew in a moment that my pride and joy might be gone.

My heart broke that day.
As I saw Zip in the spot where he lay.

Zippos High Caliber was still beautiful, shiny, and warm.
I'd spent the night before washing and trimming in the barn.
He was silky and clean and ready to show.
All I could do was hug and hold him crying out “no!”

August 1st is a day I will never forget.
Blast the drought, the dust and the humidity that let
my best buddy fall to asthma, that dreadful disease.
I knew in my heart that I couldn't ask “God, please!”

He was gone in his prime and loved by all.
No more trophies or championships or figuring his way out of a stall.
Zip gave his heart in whatever he did.
Be it reining, halter, trail, games, or teaching a kid.

He had almost human-like qualities like no other.
We sadly buried him right beside his dear mother.
Two beloved horses laying side by side.
Thank you to all who rode them, loved them, and cried.

The healing process has barely begun.
I'll never forget the reining patterns that he run.
His speed and his quickness, the collection, the spins.
It was his pride, his heart, his versatility that helped him win.

Now as I stare at his retired bridle and special bit,
those horseshoes, the blankets each with a championship year on it,
I find my heart heavy and sometimes so sad.
I do have Zip's black sister and know that I should be glad.

There forever will be a fondness in my heart
and know that our souls will never be far apart.
I'll look up to heaven and listen for hoofbeats so fast
and know Zip and Blackie are galloping through the grass.

Rest in peace my beautiful red bay.
A piece of my heart went with you that day.

Hi, I'm trying to find some theraputic centers near the Albany, NY area. I'm looking to start volunteering once college seems to slow down a bit this year. Does anyone have any suggestions for barns that I should look into and what they are looking for?

Thanks a bunch!

I believe that therapeutic riding saved my life. I was born with severe club feet and the doctors told my mom I would never be able to play sports or any "normal" kid activities. I had my first surgery at 3 weeks old and many others up until I was 7 years old. I didnt learn to walk until 4 years old, but before that I was riding ponies! Every week my mother would take me to a center in California for therapeutic riding. I have never stopped riding and my love for horses have never stopped growing. I've competed 3' hunter/jumpers and up to traing level eventing and 3rd level dressage and I am now training Gypsy horses! Doctors say I need another surgery in both feet: the bones in my right foot are completely fused and the bones in my right feet arent aligned, but if I were to get this surgery I would never be able to ride in a saddle again. It is amazing because I have constant pain except for when I am on the back of a horse! So I owe it all to horses and therapeutic riding! thank you!!!

Hello y'all from AL. My partner and I have been rescuing TN Walkers with the thought of re-training for Field Trials. I am going back to school to complete a long-neglected Psychology degree with intentions of Equine Assisted Therapy when I complete my degree. Any thoughts of what I can do in the meantime (as I pursue my degree) to prepare for this endeavor? Sure would appreciate some feedback...Thanks, Leigh C.

Hello there!! I am a Special Olympic instructor at a therapudic stable. We have over 25 'consumers' but only a few go to our annual event in Skowhegan (maine) Last year we took 13 riders and the ones who don't ride either attend our activities group or merely brush a horse. I have never done anything so rewarding as Special Olympics. I love that everyone gets a ribbon, regardless of riding skill. And even after 6 years, I still cry at the closing ceremonies. And yes, I do understand the quote "There is nothing like the outside of a horse for the inside of a human"
So if your in Maine, come up to the Skowhegan Fairgrounds either the last week in September or the first week of October (not 100% sure on the date yet) I promise you'll love it!!!
