I'm an adult who got into riding horses at age 50, never having ridden as a kid. Now I own a sweetheart of a Lippett Morgan, who is bombproof and will do anything I want him to do. I got so involved with the horse world that I wrote a book about top level equestriennes. See link to a viedo book trailer at Visit Link and see my website at www.huckleHillpress.com

Hello,
This group sounds like the group for me. I am 45, started riding when I was 3-4, then in 2001 wasnt able to ride much(1-2 time a year). Last fall myself and my husband(newbie to the joys of horses) decided it was time to start riding . My horses (yep i kept them ) were now 20 years old, both in better shape than me. We bought my husband a QH X Tenn. Walker gelding(Sam) 11yrs old, broke to ride and drive single and double. Sam was an ex-amish horse, so he was really broke and bomb proof. Getting up in the saddle was a trick at first,, I used to show pleasure and run a few barrels,,, don't think I will be running any barrels soon. LOL.. We are just enjoying simple relaxing trail rides, but it feels so good to be back in the saddle again.

It's nice that your husband got into it with you. Horses should be a family thing. My husband only likes "iron horses". My one son is allergic, the other is maybe ready to take lessons. I keep hoping for a riding buddy.

It is so cold here in PA. I have no indoor ring, so riding is not an option right now. Even when the ice melts, the mud takes over until at least April or May. I should find a barn in a 20 mile radius that has an indoor ring for lessons and keep in shape. I think there is one that teaches reining and dressage. A smart, energetic person would look into that!

Does anyone know much about reining? I am thinking that that might be my new thing to get my mind off jumping and eventing.

I don't know if I can switch. Man, do I really miss jumping and showing! But I am SO hard on myself for not being able to do anywhere close to what I use to do. Do I need a different horse or do I change riding styles until I can get a little more in shape?

Dunno if you need this response, but, from one is not switching: be patient with yourself.

I still wish I could do some simple hunter over fences, but I can't afford a decent horse to do the job, and don't have the time to train if I did. I am for now being content to trail ride and perhaps try a little western pleasure to work up to something that grabs my spirit like jumping did. I think the key is to take lessons in something, anything, to keep yourself fresh and learning.

Hi All! I began riding at the age of 2yrs - I was an avid rider as a child and through my teenage years. I fell away from horses after having to put my horse down...I was heart broken and couldn't bear to be around horses. Well 15yrs later my horse crazed daughter brought all the horsey excitment back into my life, and I got back into horses about 5yrs ago when I purchased a yearling and trained him, but then I got pregnant with my 3rd child. So now after almost 3yrs - I am back in the saddle again! It has been an adveture! My little yearling is now a big 6yr old and is a real dream...he needed a bit of a refresher this summer, but is doing well now. I now have to ride with a back brace, and I stretch before and after I ride...and take Aleve when necessary. But it's all good! My daughter is encouraging me to expand my adult horizons and begin jumping and english riding. ( I barreled and pole raced as a kid) So I expect my adventure to continue! I was excited to see that I am not the only one who is getting back in the saddle again after so many years! Thank you all for your stories and encouragment!

Hi everyone, just found your group.I grew up with horses and owned quite a few of them. I'm back riding this year after 20+yrs. without a horse. This has been quite a year because I was in terrible shape and decided to start losing weight and exercising early on in the year. Thank god for that decision because in Feb. my teenage daughters friend was begging her to come look at a horse she wanted to lease. I was immediately game to take them, I have missed horses so much!Long story short, I ended up leasing 2 horses and go out riding regularly now. Also very successful with my gym routine, I've lost almost 50lbs. I think the incentive of riding has helped with that. I've been having a great time, even riding bareback just like I used to as a youngster. Now I'm really enjoying my horses!!

Well, its been a dream realized but finally in my forties I got the horse property I've wanted since the age of 8. As a re-rider I've noticed that things are a little different now than when I was riding in my teens and early twenties. Yes, my old schoolmaster gelding cringes a bit when my extra heft gets into the saddle as opposed to my 75 lb daughter, but its all good. I purchased a hot tub to soak my aches and pains. I look forward to hearing about the adventures of others who have left the sport and returned. It really is a lifetime love. Happy Riding !

I am finally getting back in the saddle. After being a competitive show rider, and dropping it all to have a family, I finally said, its time for MOM to have some fun again. So today I popped up in the saddle. Its amazing how your brain is telling you what to do and how to do it, but that extra weight, out of shape body says NO WAY! Thank goodness for back cushions, or my horse would hate me. I cant wait to get back in gear for showing next year. It has officially been 12 yrs since I have been in the show ring, but I know I can do it again. If anyone is even remotely near east texas give me a shout, I am wanting to make some horse friends to ride with.
