well i just want to proudly say
i fell off my standardbred for the first time ever
all because he tripped and slipped on ice
and scrammbled for a good 5m to pick himself back up
:D
easyest fall ive ever taken though
he let me down so gently
i just slid down him neck slowly
ahaha
ya he's really clumsy so it was only a matter of time before one of his trips and falls involved some sort of danger to me
ahaha
Hi
I just joined and I have owned my Standardbred for about two months. I am happy to say that after a few sessions she trots on cue after round pen excercises, but boy it is a rough ride. I am sure i will be falling off soon. What are the secrets to this trot and getting a canter other the patience??

hey :)
thats so great that shes trotting soooo soon
it took me two summers to get our trot almost down pat :P
ive had my guy for 4 years now and learned sooo much
anyway about the "secrets of the trot" i find that since they're breed to pace, thats their natural movement so i find when he's tired or just lazy he tends to pace more since its so much easier for him
when hes excited and energetic it much easier to get him to trot
also i find with trotting, i dont know how to explain it, but I've learned what position my body needs to be in, like its a change in position i dont even know how to describe but i do it and it works
so it just comes after a while after you get a great feel for your horse
btw, does your trot seem REALLY bouncy
like i can barly sit mine :P
as for cantering, trooper has the most AMAZING canter i ever felt
except it really only happens when hes super excited and energetic
when ever hes not into working so much or hes really tired
he canters in the front and paces in the back in the back
which gets soooo annoying
aha i still havent quite figured this out but im working
ive heard some advice for this problem
like canter in circles and use cater poles
oh and for trotting do some trot poles! it really helps
Hi- Bouncy is an understatment. I have to honest, I am a bit green and sometimes I have to hold on as she stumbles from time to time . What is trot pole?
i got a saddlebred who has more personallity than any horse ive worked with, (besides this arab filly, he loved bottles) i dont ride him but im gonna try to start throwing my litle brother up on him. hope to hell he dont get thrown. haha.
