I am very worried right now, We are leasing 56 acres of land for our cattle (that we just sold) and we also put 4 of our horses on the property, Bandaro, AppleJax, Peaches N Cream, And Mercury. Mercury is a baby filly thoroughbred. here is a pack of 35 cyotes living around the ranch and a BIG BIG BIG cougar living on the ranch. Do you think we should get the filly of the ranch? Or is it safe?
I think we should get her off the ranch, and fast, because cyotes and cougars van easily bring sown fillies that small!!!

Gosh Sophia, that sounds horrifying. I do not know much about living on a ranch with that many coyotes and courgars.. maybe someone else could answer your questions better. With the filly, although she's smaller, she is a year old yet? I bet she is faster then the other horses? My best to you Sophia. I am sure no one would place that filly in there if something that bad could happen.

I found out good news, the cougar was never seen but the paaw prints were, and they were last year, so i bet the cougar is now somewhere else in the world. And our neighbors will watch out for coyotes when were not there. But i have been training the little filly, she is the pretty thing i have ever seen. Shes a little shy but im working on that. She is only 8 months and taller than one of my horses. As im working with her shes gaining my trust, at first she was scared of me. When do you think i should first put a saddle on her and maybe ride her in the pen?

Hi Frankie! Gotta love technology! Just a few short years ago, we were standing in my (Mark's) tackroom at GS looking over the book to see what horses you'd ride for us. I think Scott was your agent then. And just a few short years before that, I remember having a discussion about the band "Journey" as I was taking you to the post on a real swaybacked filly at the Meadowlands. And a few shorter years before that, I remember your dad coming through my Uncle Gene's shedrow to see if he could get on Alma North or Twin Time or one of the good ones.

Yea, we've both been around a while. You are one of the truly good guys in the business. I wish you the best of luck with your latest endeavor. If I can ever give you a helping hand or spread the word, please remember you have friends in the business.

That horse your racing on looks like my horses twin....
But what i wanted to ask was we own a couple thoroughbreds and we own a little colt that we want to race, and my mom had a bad accident on a horse and broke a rib, so i have to start training. How, or what do i do?????

Gosh Sophia.. this is a tough question to answer.. hope your mom is feeling better.. Training a little colt for the races is a big job and will take lots of time. Is he saddle broke yet and to what level is he training now?
Best! Frankie

he is just a little baby colt who is 4 months. But i wont be training by myself, i have another really experienced horse man, but we may be moving the colt closer to us... Cause its and hour and a half right now. But i just want to know the basics of starting, like how to exercise him and make his legs stronger! and like what kind of feed and all that stuff, then let an experienced horseman take over!!!

Hi Sophia, All horses are individuals so you feed, care and train as an individual depending on how they develop. Since you have a great horseman working with you already, that's a great thing. My expertise is in riding race horses so I am sure he knows more then I do about training :) Once he is in training, let me know how he is doing :) I also have a ton of videos in this site under videos, then racing category. Thank you Sophia! Best!! Frankie

Hey Frankie,
i have started the process to get my jocks liscence. here at Hastings we have to work a few horses, then work in company out of the gate with the stewards watching. i am currently looking for some used tack to get me started and was wondering if you could give me any ideas as to the best way to find some. Im hoping to start riding in mid to late July.
thanks a bunch, Taletha

Hi Taletha, Congrats! sounds like you are almost there! As far as used tack, do you have a valet yet or know anyone that works in the jock's room? Any of the jockeys there? Sometimes just to get started riding a race or two, you can borrow most of your equipment from other jockeys, also, they might have some used equipment for sale. If you are looking for new equipment as there are some things that may be hard to find, I recommend www.jockeytack.com . Jeff Cohen is out of Florida but ships everywhere and his prices are good. Keep us all posted Taletha!! Also, am setting up a 3 jockey boot camp and will be taking students. Still working on the details but wanted to give you a heads up just incase! :)
Cheers!

Hey,
We'll i am officially a jockey now. i have ridden three races so far, all 6 1/2 furlongs. the first i broke on top and lead for the first half a mile, before fading to 7th. my horse was holding her breath. do you have any advice on things to do to try and get them to take a breath. i tried picking her up a bit, but she held it too long and tired really quickly. my second race, my horse reared coming out of the gates, then sort of bolted, he stayed nice and straight but there was no rating him. he tired in the stretch and we finished 4th. in my third race my horse broke nicely and put me in a good spot on the rail sitting 3rd about 2 1/2 lengths off the pace. he lacked a late response and we finished 7th. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I have borrowed some tack from one of the other jockeys for now, but will have to get my own soon. thanks for the website.
