Hi Everyone! I'm new to this group and Equestrain Life. I've competed at Novice level but am now working with a 2 year old Iberian Sport Horse Filly!

I would love any tips for starting a new horse!

Biggest tip - if you've never before started your own horse, get a trusted coach or trainer to hep you through it - sort of as your mentor. It's very rewarding (I trained my 6 YO appy from scratch myself) but it's something that folks on the internet are going to have a very hard time giving you "tips" on!

my mare used to be alot stiffer at canter and trot and my friends horse used to be really stiff too. with my mare i really had to work on me not getting stiff and staying loose, although with more work my friends horse just kinda worked out of it. Sorry I dont have too much actual advice but try just properly giving her a nice long warm up. You could also try some suppleness exercises with her neck and back, i also do that with my lovely mare :) good luck

Work on lateral, flexion, and collection. Get her built and flexible all over. Also try a chiropracter. My horse was moving really stiffly too, and then we went to our chiropracter and acupuncturist, and he ended up needing both. My horse was having spasms in his hips. Thats what his problem was. Thats my main suggestion.

It doesnt really matter what age . as long as the horse is in good shape and can event easily , I have a 21 year old horse names echo hes a quater horse arabian and I am probably going to show him . He still has A LOT of get up in go in him , Under his lazyness . I am going to take it easy on him if i do show again this year , so age doesnt really matter as long as your horse can do it hope this helps ! - meg

Hello everyone! I am new on here. Love to event and chat with other eventers. I am currently doing BN. Goal for next fall is to move up to Novice, but still have a lot of work to do!! My dressage scores are low to mid 40's.... any suggestions on how to get them down to mid 30's? Don't understand because I see horses that aren't even round, or on the bit and are getting in the 30's? It is frustrating!!

The best thing to do is be very very accurate. Also at BN it is a matter of being balanced, accepting of the bit, and keeping a nice even tempo. Also a very big thing in eventing is that even in your horse is round a deep they need to keep their shoulders up and balanced back. Most event dressage judges dislike seeing a horse on the forehand.

Also read the comments on the dressage tests! It helps a lot and lets you know where you are going wrong.

I called the herd for their morning meal.
He didn't come and the fear in my heart was immediately real.

He was always there, the head of the herd.
The other horses didn't come for the grain that was offered.
Those equines had a look in their eyes that something was wrong.
I knew in a moment that my pride and joy might be gone.

My heart broke that day.
As I saw Zip in the spot where he lay.

Zippos High Caliber was still beautiful, shiny, and warm.
I'd spent the night before washing and trimming in the barn.
He was silky and clean and ready to show.
All I could do was hug and hold him crying out “no!”

August 1st is a day I will never forget.
Blast the drought, the dust and the humidity that let
my best buddy fall to asthma, that dreadful disease.
I knew in my heart that I couldn't ask “God, please!”

He was gone in his prime and loved by all.
No more trophies or championships or figuring his way out of a stall.
Zip gave his heart in whatever he did.
Be it reining, halter, trail, games, or teaching a kid.

He had almost human-like qualities like no other.
We sadly buried him right beside his dear mother.
Two beloved horses laying side by side.
Thank you to all who rode them, loved them, and cried.

The healing process has barely begun.
I'll never forget the reining patterns that he run.
His speed and his quickness, the collection, the spins.
It was his pride, his heart, his versatility that helped him win.

Now as I stare at his retired bridle and special bit,
those horseshoes, the blankets each with a championship year on it,
I find my heart heavy and sometimes so sad.
I do have Zip's black sister and know that I should be glad.

There forever will be a fondness in my heart
and know that our souls will never be far apart.
I'll look up to heaven and listen for hoofbeats so fast
and know Zip and Blackie are galloping through the grass.

Rest in peace my beautiful red bay.
A piece of my heart went with you that day.
