This is a group for sympathetic riders who can relate to that disappointing time when you can't ride your horse due to an injury. Please share your experiences with injury, your journey with your veterinarians and results. All welcome!
Did you really use super glue on your horse?
Hang in there Devon, you are a real trooper to keep trying. Do the stirrup irons that have bend in them help you at all? For example, the Herm Sprenger stirrups? Visit Link
I have used them for years, and they seem to help me take pressure off my joints.
Thanks. Those stirrups are actually worse because they crank my heel down too far...no stirrups is actually better for my legs :)
My advice is to take your time. Start by getting back on a horse that you know is very safe and you don't have to worry. Don't try to rush it. I have had some really bad falls, and sometimes it just took taking a deep breath, not allowing any negative thoughts in my head while I was on and just doing it.
I broke my left humuras bone last Sept. 2008, when my horse spooked and my saddle slipped. I tried , hanging on so I could get him to stop because I knew I did not want to hit the ground, but instead of getting him to stop he took off at a full run for you life gallop, so by the time i did hit the ground he was going full speed. I know my helment saved my head, but my arm was not so lucky. I broke it all the way through the bone.
It took me 4 months to heal enough to go back to work, I am still not back to normal. It was the first time I ever broke a bone. It was the worsest I had ever been hurt. I started by doing a lot of ground work and just riding in the round pen. I finally got brave enough to take him out of the pen again. I did good the first few time, but now this past week he threw me off again, by stopping and spinning around really fast. I went flying off and landed on my right side. I brusied by ribs pretty badly. Now I am thinking about getting rid of that horse and getting one that is safer to ride. But I do not know.
I think that is a good idea Mary. He does not sound safe for you. He needs professional training and you need a horse that will help rebuild your confidence.
I would definitely leave the young or untrained horses to a professional. You need a horse that has been around the block, and will help build your confidence. That is the most important thing, safety and confidence. Those two things will help you to become a better rider and horse person.
