Hi-ho, small farmers and ranchers! Here's a group for those of us who live on and/or own and maintain a small hobby farm or ranch and are horse owners! Do you bale your own hay? Own a tractor? Are constantly fixin' the fence? We all know what a labor of love small farm ownership is, so share your tips on everything from maintenance, fencing, upkeep, building a barn or round pen, or share funny stories about your horses and the other animals that happen to share the farm with them!

We've lived on my husband's family farm in OH for a number of years now...growing up in northern (and southern) CA, I sure never thought I'd end up here! There's about 25 acres of what was once a 640 acre homestead from my mother-in-law's family. We also purchased a 45 acre farm behind us that the cows currently run on ( a small herd of Angus mix). My husband and I are hoping to build a log home there one day, it has a perfect lot with an old house that the guys use for deer camp! (The old house is way too shot to re-do). Anyway, the horses are on the original property and have numerous acres of pasture, woods, and springs. The barn is 150+ years old, still has original wood nails in the beams! The challenges we face are mostly costs of upkeep--we make a modest income and much goes to daily care of the animals! Aside from the horses and cows, there are 13 pygmy goats, one turkey tom, 5 dogs (between father-in-law and us), and about 5 barn cats. Sometimes we have chickens when something doesn't kill them off! Hay season will be here in May or June, and we mostly cut grass hay and do both square and round bales. We have just enough to get through winter--not much left over so we don't sell hay as of yet. I would love to hear from anyone about their small farms, too, so don't be shy!
