if he is that game ready kinda horse what i have that works is set up almost like an obstacle course. its fun and it helps see where he stands on turning position and how it feels. set a pole down for a start point. then layout a series of maybe 7 poles for a him 2 walk over then bring him 2 the first barrel go around it and move 2 the other side, have a cone set up and stop at the cone for a second, then start have another barrell or something for him to go around. i would suggest walking it the first time or two then start picking up the pace. you can modify it but its the general idea. the horses i work with love it and its always a great way to get things going. hope that helps!

My horse got a bit of a break during my first year of college. I'm now working with her to start running barrels again. She's began running past the first barrel, doesn't even begin to turn it. I think that part of her problem is that she has her head too high, so I've put a tie down on her and we'll see how that works. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,
Cassie

You might try just riding her quiet not running her. slowly get her ready to start running again. Dont drill the pattern just do some small circles and figure eights and different exercises like that to get her listening to you. Work on perfecting your turns at a walk then try the different stuff at a trot then canter. then once you feel she is ready run her once, and see how it works out.

I would just ride him quiet. dont really do the pattern with him. Get him listening to you and what you want him to do so he doesnt learn to take advantage and run when he wants to. When you are ready try doing some patterns with six barrels or doing some figure eights, just keeping him listening to you but also schooling him on his turns. Then you can start walking and trotting him trough the pattern. Dont drill the horse on the pattern or he might get sour. just take it easy with him so you both can learn how to handle each other. Im sure you will do fine! It takes alot of work, but it will be worth it! Have fun and GOOD LUCK! =D

That kinda happend with me too... Just start out slow!! Review the patterns over and over for him and yourself, and gradually get faster and you'll eventually get more relaxed and etc...Good Luck!
