hi guys im pretty new to this site!!
I am 16 and I have my own horse, he is a standardbred, I actually had a racehorse farm with 27 horses that did harness racing, and i had to sell everything the farm and 26 of the horses, but i kept one of them his name is Paco and when we sold off we also retired Paco, he is a 6 year old gelding soon to be 7 and he will become a riding horse, I have been training him since July and he is doing amazing!!!! next summer I'm going to be taking him to a Standardbred horse show at Grand River Raceway in Elora, ON

Standardbred! I just adopted my own off the track :D I had him for 2 weeks. And we put the saddle on and then hopped on and he didn't care- he's 6. I guess 7 now b/c of the new year... We've been doing endurance and dressage. They are awesome horses! So athletic but sweet too. What's his time?

hey guys ! :)
my name is Kelly, i'm 15 years old and i started riding about 8 years ago. but i've been at the barn i am at now with the same trainers (experienced with Olympics) for over 3 years. i am completely in love with a school horse i ride, but.. she's a school horse- she's not for sale. and probably never will be. anyways, my parents know i want a horse.. but i don't think they know how serious i am. i don't think we'd be able to afford a horse, to own one. but we could deal with the costs of leasing/half-leasing. but then i'd have to let go of the school horse i love. :( anyone have any advice, opinions, anything about what i should do to possibly lease a horse? and how much does it cost for you to own/lease/half lease a horse + lessons at least once a week? thanks. :)

Where I live, half leasing is anywhere from $240-$400 a month depending on the barn and how many days you can ride. Or if you could find a barn with cheap boarding you could find someone to split the board in half with so you can share the horse. (: I hope I helped!

When I leased, it cost me between $200-400 a month. The cost depends on how often you ride, and also if you do work. I know personally, that barns are usually very grateful for any help they can get and if you offer to brush and tack your own horse and maybe muck his/her stall that helps too. It sounds like you probably have grooms at your stable who take care of most of the work for the horses, but it's worth a shot. And about having to give up your schooley. It's probably time to move up to a more advanced horse if you're thinking about owning your own. I have had to move up and leave a lot of my favorites over the years as I got more advanced and moved on. It's all about just looking over your options and considering the best possible thing for you. I hope I helped. :)

the stable i ride at and board my horse at has school horses and they do part-boarding, maybe you can ask to part-board the school horse??

that sucks.I've been riding for 10 years my parents are the same. I've told them a zillion times how much I want a horse, but they dont think I'm ready i guess. :(
Im hoping to start leasing the Apaloosa im riding right now to prove I can take care of a horse.

I had been riding for 13 years before I got my horse. Keep trying. It will happen if you want it badly enough!

I have had to go through this but in a different way. I went to the barn one day and my instructor told me she had sold the horse I was leasing and taking care of for over a year. It was really hard. I have also lost horses in accidents and that is the worst. You just have to stay strong and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you love horses as much as I do, you probably won't want to be away from them for very long, so start hitching rides with your barn buddies whenever you can. And there are also other ways to catch free rides too. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

You could try leasing him out or loaning him to a lesson program. That way you still own him but that will make it easier to afford him. Also if you absoloutley HAVE to sell him ask the new owner if you can go visit him every once in a while. I hope it works out for you.

its hard i know. my horse got so bad that we had to take him to an auction. he left on a monday and the auction was on friday so i went threw thinking about getting sold to meat and everything. he was abused before i got him and i didnt want it to happen. you just have to remember the good times and remember its okay to cry. then after you get passed the sad part you realize that you both learned a lot and you had great time you can get pictures. for christmas one girl at my barn game me pictures of us with larry my horse during the summer, laughing and having a good time. you dont have to forget about it you just have to get over it, thats a saying from a book and i think that got me through a lot to

Okay so those two fillies i have are about to be two in like...march and april. i've already been putting a saddle on them and i've lead them around and what not, but idk how to get them started on a bit or how to even know when to get on them. do i just jump on or put feed bags on them or what? the only one thats really rode them is my cat lol.. brook's alot easier to deal with she's very friendly and gypsy is more skiddish so i think i should handle them a little different but i dont know how...

wow thats alot of bad grammer usage XD haha but seriously what do i do?

read books on horses or go to your nearest horse stable and ask if they could use a hand some places are willing to exchange labor (you working) for lessons thats what i used to do before i got my own horses

Comment By Sonya Nottelling(:

I used to go to a place that let you work in exchange for riding if you were twelve and under. Then, once you turned thirteen they would pay you instead of having you ride. I think if you could find somewhere like that you would be able to ride... you could try contacting barns to see if they would do that or ask people if they know any barns that do.

There are often people, especially in rural areas of the country who want people to come ride their horses for them because they are too busy or just can't afford to take time out to spend time with their horse. They will often offer free rides. There are also a lot of people that try to lease out their horses when they are pregnant too. So if you could find someone like that, I'm sure it would help. Also, if you have friends who ride or friends of friends who ride you can often hitch a free ride with them. Most of your experience is gained just horsing around so have fun and good luck!
