Equestrian Life is an online community for horse people.
We bring together horse people across all disciplines, breeds and sports.
We invite you to connect with others who love horses as much as you do.
Hi Jacqueline,
The first thing I would do is have her checked by your vet or chiropractor. Usually if a horse has a sudden change in attitude or willingness, it’s because of soreness somewhere. Perhaps her back is out and that is causing her pain and discomfort. Once any physical problems have been ruled out, then I would go back to groundwork to get your mare respecting and trusting you again.
I sell a couple of really good videos on groundwork. Go to my website at: www.EquestrianResourceSolutions.com/products. Click on the video icon and there you will find the ground working videos. You may also want to consider signing up for my Weekly E-Tips or Solutions Center where you can receive specific how-to training info via a weekly email or one-on-one training support through my Solutions Center.
Best of luck,
Kim
If you have a round pen, try to get him going away from you and try escalation of your energy until you get a response. Then try to work on upward and downward transitions-walk -trot -canter -canter trot walk. Watch for licking & chewing, horse keepimg inside ear on you like "radar". Once you get this established then you can start to move front end seperate from hind end. Put horse's nose on fence to block forward motion move front end step then move back end(use an aid where your leg would go- like a dressage whip or a short lunge whip and tap his side.As SOON as he does one step-rest. Then you can start putting 2, 3 steps. Remember, be as gentle as possible but as firm as necessary. Horses learn under relaese of pressure and from rest and reward. Good luck! feel free to email or call if you have any problems or questions
