Hi - I'm new to this site and group! It's about to be a New Year...so can anyone help get me into the gym with some strength training tips? I will go back to my Pilates but also need some other "stuff" that does not include jogging. Thanks!

Hi my name is Cat. I've been a fully certified full time pilates & yoga instructor for the last 3 years (and 10 yr pilates practitioner prior to that) and the difference since having my daughter is incredible. I was fit due to being athletic and an avid pilates practitioner prior but just 6 weeks after birth I started riding again after a long break but my core was not as strong and I felt burn but with continued conditioning I no longer feel any strain. I can't imagine riding without a strong core in order to get the full experience for me and my mare.

I will start teaching Equilates & DOGA YOGA in Spring 2010 in Lennoxville QC if any of you are local or interested e-mail me at: pilatesaveccat@videotron.ca:

DOGA YOGA
I've created a class that brings your dog onto the yoga mat. We will first warm-up on leash outside if weather permits.
Watch for a class starting Spring 2010 @ Blue Seal Animal Nutrition Centre.

EQUILATES
A unique program for the equestrian, it's a sport specific training method developed by Betsy Steiner (former Olympian).
Equilates uses the basic premises of Pilates: promoting elongation of the spine, muscular flexibility and balance, strengthening the core resulting in the relaxed concentration and flow needed to create the partnership between horse and rider. In addition, Equilates focuses on the mind/body connection using Pilates principles and incorporating Yoga, elements of martial arts and the practice of visualization.
Watch for a class starting Spring 2010 @ Blue Seal Animal Nutrition Centre.
It's simply a ball, mat & supportive footwear!

I teach for Bishop's University Recreation and Athletics and the Lennoxville & District Women's Centre specializing in power, weight loss & athletic pilates.

Heather Sansom's offer sounds/looks excellent for those of you who are looking for a home workout program.

Personally I do suggest working with a certified instructor in a class or one on one first to get a good understanding & foundation IF you have never had pilates/core training in the past as it is very technical and as a result you will be able to get a more effective return.

Enjoy & Keep it Simple,
Cat

Cat,
I loved your post. Sorry it has taken me so long to comment. I am now 47 and know that I am not nearly as strong in my core as I used to be. I have never done pilates or yoga, but know lot's of folks who have benefited. Any advice for an absolute novice to help ease him into doing the thing he needs to do for his own health and fitness.

When I regularly showed dressage I used to do a lot of pilates with my dressage trainer. Also I didquite a bit of running.Occasionaly before I ride I will run out to my horse, put the halter on her and trot back n forth 2 or 3 times with her so I have a running buddy,my bestbuddy.

I have scoliosis, and when I ride my back hurts a lot. Is there anything I can do to help with the pain? Also I'd love some exercises to do and a diet plan recommendation from all of you riders.

Hi everyone, I'm Melanie..I have back issues due to a riding accident 6 years ago. I started doing Pilates 30 minutes+ a day to strengthen my core muscles and my back..it started working..and i was looking great. But I couldn't keep up with it. Does anybody have any suggestions for keeping up the good work? lol

That's great that you started Pilates, but it's definately hard to keep up on your own, especially if it's the same moves over and over again. Try incorporating some Yoga into your Pilates. Yoga is a great way to start and finish any exercise routine. It's also great for flexibility in the saddle. Try picking up some new books on Pilates with many different moves from beginner to advanced. Push yourself to do better and better each day and make it a challenge to get those legs straighter and core more engaged each time. If you make goals and challenge yourself it will be easier to keep up and much more rewarding. Good luck and don't give up!
