Dear Fit Riders,

Happy New year to you all. I'm sure that many resolutions will be made tonight and pondered tomorrow. My hope is that improved physical fitness will be one not easily discarded. The most important thing is that you begin. Be gentle on your self and begin one thing that you know is positive. Let that sink in and see how that feels. Do that for a while and then find it a friend. Again, just begin even the simplest of things and improve your life.

Wishing all the best in 2009.

Jay

Hi Group, I am the creator and builder of the Equicizer which is a safe, non-motorized mechanical horse used for equestrians to train, exercise and use for therapy. The Equicizer offers great core exercise for everyone but specifically engages the muscles need to riding horses that treadmills, exercise bikes or balls to not. I would love to answer anyone's questions but meanwhile, check my profiile and see what the Equicizer is!! Thank you!!

I used to be in the best shape of my life about a year ago. I started to run most days and then came the foot injury, and now it is the onset of arthritis in a minimum of my knees, hips, ankles, wrists, and fingers. I am only 19 so this fact scares me a little. I have also put on about 20 pounds. I am now training my youngest 6 yr old QH mare to get ready to jump over the winter. Between the extra 20 pounds and such, this is not going to be a easy task for me...any suggestions?

Hey try swimming for excercise, its easy on the joints (i have arthritis in my knees and at 17 I know how scary it is) hte water acts as resistance and provides a great cardio workout without having any impact.

I have balance issues due to a spinal cord birth defect called Spina Bifida. Can anyone suggest any sort of exercises to strengthen my core muscles that will help me balance? I read an article one time on fitness in the saddle and it had pics of different exercises that you could do from the saddle to improve your posture and balance. I wish I could find the magazine but I'm sure it's been thrown out long ago.

Hi Keith! My name is Christy Mackaness & I am a representative for H&H Horse bringing you all things top of the line an equestrian and horse could need, including being a major distributor of Total Health Enhancement Supplements. I have been an active Eventer for 18 years now and after studying fitness for the past 10 years, I have learned a lot about what helps me the most while in the saddle.
Balance is such a big part of success and fun while riding. Your core, or the area in the middle of your body that includes all abdominal & back muscles, is absolutely the place to start strengthening to better your balance. My favorite exercises to strengthen the core and ones that I have adhered to for my many years of riding would be pilates exercises. Pilates targets the core and has exercises for any fitness level from beginner to advance. Check back soon, I will be posting weekly exercises that have helped me and will hopefully help you to build core strength and balance in the saddle.

I went to an excellent talk on being mentally prepared for shows. One of the big points was that you must make a goal, whether it be reachable or not, something you can work towards. Also, as humans, we also set little goals. However we don't often appreciate ourselves reaching these goals because once we reach it, we rise the bar again.

Dear Hannah,

No worries! If you take as fine a care of yourself as you do of your horse it begins to come into focus. As I am approaching my middle age, the more I'm becoming aware of simply how much more I eat than I need to.
Just walking more and thinking about the quality and quantity of food has made a big difference as well. My wife has helped me to learn that eating more slowly allows the brain to get more timely information so i don't shove in too much and then realize I'm too full. I've done a diet or two, but just becoming more active and watching calories has been much more effective than anything and the pounds are staying off.

I am no healthcare professional, nor do I play one on the internet, but I'm finding a significant purpose to be about has taken my focus off the hinges on the refrigerator door and has lessened my desire to eat as a matter of course.

Again, those are observations for me. I hope they are helpful I'm still the guy who has a gym membership, but hasn't darkened the door in months.

Sincerely,

Jay

Wow, you definately echoed the one big thing about the way I eat. I also eat way too fast. I have been trying to tell myself for weeks that I need to slow down, but I just can't seem to do it. I'm trying to get a bit more exercise in... bring my mp3 along with me so that I want to walk more, park my car farther away from where ever I may be, and doing some crunches and other cardio work (like dancing, if you want to call it that). I've also been trying to ride without stirrups, but my horse is not the best horse to do that with. Hopefully, someday, this will start to better my riding.

Oh jeez, I don't do anything. I guess I really should. I would love some ideas!

I have crossed tained by doing ballet for my entire life and I find that it has helped my riding more than any other form of exercise. It not only increases stamina, but also builds strength, helps develop an acute sense of rhythm, increases flexibility, and teaches independant control of all muscle groups, particularly your core.
