We recently bought a 8yr old mustang from a teenage girl that was affraid of her, for our 12 yr old daughter Caitlyn they are both pictured in my profile. Lady W is a very willing sweet girl but has a wild side that she shows sometime. For instance is terrified of a horse trailer and turned very wild for about a week. She is fine now and Caitlyn can ride her , she has had some ground work training but still has a way to go. Caitlyns goal with her is to do gymkhana and a few 4-H shows she will ride english or western, but we need to get her over her trailer fear so we can find someone to train her, no one is willing to come to us. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In March 2008 I adopted a mustang from Wyoming, and in June she had a colt (I wasn't aware when i bought her that she was pregnant) and now I have trained her, and saddling breaking the colt will come this month, hopefully. I have had other horses, but she is the first horse that's truly mine and I'm old enough to realize how wonderful (and how much responsibility) horses are. I love her to death, and the colt is great! The mare is a chestnut bay, and the colt is a chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, the are both very beautiful. They have been very easy to train, and a joy to ride and own. I can give nothing but good reviews to Mustangs!!!

Just want to make sure everyone is aware of the Napa Mustang Days coming May 15 and 16. Looks like it will be a great event; there will be a BLM adoption, some gentling training by Leslie Neuman and a parade of Ambassadors (previously adopted mustangs). See the flyer at Visit Link

I own a 5 year old spanish Mustang, He was 3 years old when my mom handed him over to me bcuz I was the only one he trusted and well I trusted him alot..When montana was 2 years old he was kind of neglected...So when He came to my Grandma's everyone was afaird of him, until me..I had to get him to trust humans again, which took awhile..I also had to get him used to having his legs handle, getting him used to being lead in and out of the pasture, and some other stuff...And he wasnt hard to break...But today he is far more reliable then my mom's mare..And I'm so proud to be his owner :)

It sounds like you guy's just clicked. That is how I felt about Finn, even after I found out he was sick, I knew I wanted to be the one to take care of him.

Well, wet weather has settled in over No. CA but Finn really doesn't seem to mind the muddy pasture, he still lays down every night. I know because I get to wash his blanket. I don't know if anyone else's Mustang also does'nt seem to be as persnickity about getting their feet wet or any other part of them? Another thing I've noticed is he is super playful/curious and when he gets really excited he makes this high pitched squealing (almost dolphin like) noise, tosses his head and will leap into the are, buck and just throw himself playfully around. I thought it might be a baby thing but my Farrier was out today, she also has Mustangs, and said that some horses do that when they get excited and full of themselves, so its something he and I will be working on, because if your not paying attention he might accidentally bowl you over.

I am glad I found this. I own a spanish mustang so he was never wild but he acts like he could have been. He is one of the BEST horses I have ever riden and hope that I can breed them when I start my own farm:)

Grrrr!! I have had a major set back with my stud colt Tonka!!! his wild side has come out for the worst, he went from being sweet and a love bug to a real jerk!!! i tought all was going well, and then I talked to a friend who has his full brother but two years older and they said their horse had done the same thing. I am hoping this is just the terrible 2's lol!! and he lost his halter. All I could say is " That lil' bugger!" so now it's back to baby steps again.

What's he doing? Biting. Kicking, etc? Finn has always been bitey but its gotten better with persistance. Although there are still the times when he'll reach out unexpectedly to nip or bite me and I can see in his eye he knows full well not to, but he is testing me and my ability to be his leader. Mustangs are smart, they have to be and they are more apt to dominance in my small experience, especially in a stud. I hope your right and this is just a testing phase he's going through, be steadfast and don't let him know he's getting to you.

HOORAY. Today Finn wore a bare back pad and halter (a bitless side pull, but still) for the 1st time. I showed him all the gear, let him sniff them and rubbed each item on his neck and face before putting it on. He could have cared less, even when I cinched the girth, he just kinda looked around to see what I was doing. He looked so good tacked up and I really wanted to jump on his back. Maybe this summer. We still aren't even sure how old he is, we believe between two and three, he lost a tooth about a month ago, but was it the 1st one or the last? So I am hoping the vet can tell me when he is out and give and idea of when he will be physically ready to be ridden.
