Pedigree

Comma to the Top was bred in Florida by Richard and Linda Thompson

He is from the second crop of sprinter Bwana Charlie and is bred for speed on both sides of his pedigree Bwana Charlie is by the versatile Indian Charlie, who is also the sire of early Derby favorite Uncle Mo; Indian Charlie has been represented by some nice route runners, including champion Fleet Indian and Grade 1 winner Pampered Princess, but he’s better known for passing his brilliant speed to offspring, including champion female sprinter Indian Blessing and multiple Grade 3 winner Conveyance, who faded to 15th after setting the pace in the 2010 Kentucky Derby

Bwana Charlie never tried longer distances, making all 19 career starts at a mile or less, and compiled wins in Amsterdam (G3) and Lafayette (G3) at three and placed in the one-mile Derby Trial (G3)

Comma to the Top is the second foal to race out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Maggie’s Storm, and both his dam and half-sibling were winless in multiple starts; Maggie’s Storm is out of Maggie’s Pistol, who won the seven-furlong Virginia H. (G3) and made all 28 career starts at a mile or less; this is also the female family of Grade 3 vixen and Grade 1-placed Good Potential, who was at her best going one turn

Broodmare sire Stormy Atlantic is by leading sire Storm Cat, an excellent source of both speed and stamina, but the stakes winner never raced past six furlongs in 15 career starts; Stormy Atlantic has a limited number of runners as a broodmare sire, but his only other stakes winner is It’s Me Mom, who captured the six-furlong Presque Isle Downs Debutante in 2010 and opened her sophomore season with a fourth in the six-furlong Old Hat S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park

Comma to the Top excelled at distances up to 1 1/16 miles last year, posting a convincing 1 ¾-length win in the CashCall Futurity (G1), and he’ll need to continue to outrun his pedigree to thrive at the 1 ¼-mile Derby distance
