Gallop is the horse's fastest gait, with speeds that can average 18 miles per hour or more. The gallop is a four-beat gait. The sequence of footfalls, if the horse is beginning with the left lead, is as follows: right hind, left hind, right front, left front, all hitting the ground separately in a quick rhythm. The right lead starts with the left hind, then the right hind, the left front and then the right front. A movement of suspension follows the four beats, when all four feet are off the ground.
