Hindquarters The hindquarters of a horse is the engine of that horse. It is therefore vital that the hindquarters be suited for the function expected of each individual. For example, a racehorse needs hindquarters that can easily propel him over moderate distances in a short amount of time, whereas a Clydesdale needs hindquarters that can propel him forward with shorter strides that allow him to pull heavy loads over long distances without causing exhaustion and fatigue.
