Sire Giant's Causeway was a six-time Group 1 winner -- including the Eclipse S. (Eng-G1), Juddmonte International S. (Eng-G1) and Irish Champion S. (Ire-G1) at 1 1/4 miles -- and narrowly missed winning the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs in his only start on dirt.

Giant's Causeway's leading offspring have won worldwide at the top level, on dirt and turf, and include numerous champions and classic winners. His most noted sons and daughters in North America include Wood Memorial S. (G1) winner Eskendereya, who would have started as the favorite in the 2010 Kentucky Derby (G1) if he had not been sidelined with an injury. Others of note in this category include Heatseeker (Ire), Swift Temper, Frost Giant and Red Giant -- all Grade 1 winners and major stakes winners at 1 1/4 miles -- as well as Grade 1 victors Aragorn (Ire), My Typhoon (Ire), First Samurai, and Internallyflawless.

Santiva was produced by Slide, who placed in both starts and has also reared the Grade 2-placed Her Majesty (Giant's Causeway) and Take Arms (Honour and Glory). Slide is a half-sister to 1989 champion sprinter Safely Kept (Horatius) and six-furlong Phoenix S. (G2) winner Partner's Hero (Danzig).

Broodmare sire Smarten was a three-year-old of 1979 who was just below top class. He won such events as the Illinois Derby (G3), Ohio Derby (G2) and American Derby (G2), and placed in longer-distance events like the Travers S. (G1), Meadowlands Cup (G2), Arkansas Derby (G2), Secretariat S. (G2) and Lawrence Realization S. (G2).

Smarten was the sire of Canadian champion filly Classy 'n Smart, who in turn produced Canadian Horse of the Year and U.S. champion Dance Smartly (Danzig) as well as Grade 1 winner Smart Strike (Mr. Prospector). Dance Smartly herself produced two winners of the 1 1/4-mile Queen's Plate, while Smart Strike sired two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, turf male champion English Channel and last year's three-year-old colt champion and Preakness S. (G1) winner Lookin at Lucky.

Another notable who counts Smarten as a broodmare sire is General Challenge (General Meeting), who won the Santa Anita H. (G1) and Pacific Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles, but was a sub-par 11th as part of a favored entry in the 1999 Kentucky Derby.
