Zayat Stables, LLC, ranked as the nation's leading owner in earnings last year, with its runners bankrolling more than $6.8 million. It is the nom de course of Ahmed Zayat, who has been involved in buying horses at auction for just a few years. Born in Cairo, Egypt, Zayat earned Master's degrees in business and public health from Boston University and Harvard University. He is perhaps best known for being the CEO and Chairman of Al Ahram Beverages Company (ABC), the largest beverage manufacturer and distributor in the Middle East, which was later sold to Heineken International. He is also the largest shareholder in Misr Glass Manufacturing (MGM), the largest manufacturer of glass containers in Egypt. In his early teens, Zayat was introduced to racehorses while competing in national show jumping events in his native Egypt. Zayat has more than 100 horses dispersed among several trainers, including Bob Baffert, Bill Mott, Steve Asmussen and Richard Dutrow. Notable horses having sported the Zayat silks include Point Ashley, Downthedustyroad, J Be K and E Z Warrior. Zayat keeps about 20 broodmares in Kentucky and has shown an interest in someday standing stallions.
