About Me

My name is Charlie (short for Charlene)
I'm 19, some people think I'm tall, some people think I'm short...statistics say I'm just above or at the tall end of average height at 5'6". My passion is to serve others through animals while at the same time showing them about God. I don't understand most internet/text talk, but I know some stuff, and can occasionally figure it out when I see it.
I have always ridden Western until recently. I want to become a vet, but I can't seem to be able to get in a vet's office to see if that's really what I want to do or not. If I decide not to go into that I plan on being a horse trainer or riding instructor. I'm even thinking about maybe owning a boarding stable, but I'm not sure if that will work out or not. So far everyone I've talked to has said to stay out of the horse business, but the only place I feel comfortable is in the saddle. Mostly because I'm not tripping over my big feet :) I'm a researcher...not like as a job, but a personality. If I hear something I'll research it forever, even after I've tried it. Some might call me skeptical, but I look at it as risk reduction!
As far as riding goes, I prefer barefoot horses because they can feel where they are going, their hooves stay healthier (look at the wild hoof if you don't believe me) and shoes can mask problems. Taking shoes off of a horse will indeed make them sore until the sole gets calloused again. It takes about a year for the hoof to be restored to a natural shape after shoes or an unnatural barefoot trim. I would say I am a confident rider. When I got Crystal she thought that when I got on it was time to go, and I was just getting back into riding. I have only fallen off of Crystal three and a half times...well four actually if you count the really bad emergency dismount...and Sonny multiple times, one of which I was bareback and bridleless and he decided to sideswipe Crys at a canter...did I mention I love my helmet?
Right now I work at Dairy Queen, go to the barn after work, clean stalls, ride, hang out, talk, plan Kylie's schedule. Fun stuff like that, and yes, I really do enjoy cleaning stalls :)
Right now I'm looking for extra money to:
1) Finish paying Mom for the Pontiac FireTurd
2) Get a really good Emergeny fund for the next time I try to poke my eye out, miss 2 weeks of work and then get a $200 speeding ticket...Just kidding I don't plan on doing ANY of those things ever again
3) Maybe get a really nice English Saddle (looking at the Collegiate Diploma Convertible C/C saddle)
4) Take 2 lessons per week or save up for a jumper

I have 3 horses
Crystal
Mare
Light Palomino, complete w/ dapples, two (left) socks & hooves, a star, & a small character spot on her left hip
about 9 years old
13.3hh
Quarter horse (grade, may have some pony blood)
ex-barrel racer loves to run, gets jealous when you ride other horses. I am currently training her to be a children's hunter. does great with beginners on lead/lunge line or with no jumps set up. Working on staying calm up to, over and after the jumps. Just making her go over lots of them seems to be doing the most for keeping her calm. Very light and sensitive little mare though :)

Sonny
Gelding
He is usually very bronzy and orange, but about every other thing I read says it's sorrel and the rest say chestnut. Take your pick...and he has a star.
He was pretty much yard-art before he came to me. Now he's learning how to be a riding horse. He was pretty much broke when we got him, just a deadheaded and lazy. Now he's got a nice calm attitude when my mom or kids ride him. When I ride him it's a completely different story, He has actually reared on me before but he only came a couple inches off of the ground and then got a really good workout. Now he will usually stay on the bit, turn and stop quickly, and listen to my leg. I have been working on side passing with him because he's very narrow and not flexible. It is pretty hard for him so I only have him do two good steps in each direction.

Roja Reina (Queen)
Filly
Sorel with a big blaze and two white socks.
She is three years old and has had a saddle on her, but not been ridden. She is Halter/Western pleasure bred and her dam is big and wide so she will probably have a similar build. I am going to start training her to ride over the summer and hopefully begin showing her at some point.

Sonny is my mom's horse, but I ride him a lot because she works nights and odd hours in the ER. I will probably try to jump Crystal or do English pleasure with her since I'm pretty big for her. I am currently taking lesson and have been jumping for about three months. The highest I’ve gone is 2’3” and I am going to go to my first show and just do the 18” classes because I get nervous when I have to perform in front of people.
