About Me
Born in Montserrat, West Indies as the middle of three girls, I moved at the age of 4 with my family to Johns Island, SC outside of Charleston. At age 8 my mother, a horse enthusiast herself, allowed me to start taking riding lessons at a local Eventing stable. At the time I was already taking piano when my younger sister was taking riding lessons, so it took a bit of persuasion before my mother allowed me to start as well. I spent every moment I wasnât in school at the barn riding anything my instructor would let me ride. At age 10, Lellie Ward, an eventer of international repute, came to Johns Island to judge a horse show when my mother sparked a relationship. That summer my mother took me to Lellieâs Paradise Farm in Aiken, SC where I spent a couple months as a working student. Those were the first of many months under Lellieâs tutelage. Lellie became and still is a very integral part of my Eventing career. Lellie helped me and my first horse Whirling Stono, who was my mothers she bought off the track at age 5, make it to the preliminary level and to represent Area III as a young rider. The year I turned 15 and became eligible to compete at the North American Young Riders Championship, my dearest mount died tragically in the field. Lellie, as not only my instructor, but greatest mentor, helped me through that great loss and encouraged me to continue in the sport. I traveled to Aiken often riding whatever was on the farm, but my competition schedule slowed as I started college at The College of Charleston. My focus shifted to school and in the spring of 2004 I attended the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day event, US eventingâs premier spectacle. It was there that I watched Lellie compete Riverdance, a horse I had helped bring along from the beginning. The competitive spark was reignited and I returned again to the sport I loved so dearly. In 2005, I graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Health. That same year a new horse came into my life. He belonged to an old friend I had lost touch with for years. This friend had this horseâs mother and before he was born we joked he would become my next eventer. In 2006 âKingpinâ a 1997 Oldenburg/Thoroughbred in fact became my next Eventer. 2009 will mark his first full season at the Training level, with the hope to be competing him at the Preliminary level at yearâs end. Currently I reside on Johns Island and travel to Paradise Farm in Aiken âmy second homeâ to work with Lellie. King is stabled at Ironhorse Farm on Johns Island, a wonderful farm I have been a part of for 10 years. I have recently joined H & H Horse as the representative for South Carolina, a leading provider of world class nutritional solutions, barn design, and training apparel. My long term goal and dream is to one day represent the US at the Olympic Games.
