About Me
Born and raised in Oregon and loved riding the countryside up there whenever I could as a kid. As a child I was horse crazy, but my family wasn't into horses, so I've found ways to be around horses for nearly my whole life. Begged for horse riding lessons, cleaned stalls/corrals just to be around them, used the money I earned from cleaning corrals to rent horses, exercised barn sour horses for free (that taught me a lot, lol). When I came to California I took horse training classes in college, majoring in Equine Sciences. After a few years of college training classes I trained the first horse, an Arab mare, I owned and have raised and trained all my horses I've had since.
I'm a married mother of four daughters, all of whom have a love of horses too. Hubby likes horses, though is not as passionate about them as we girls, lol.
My horse is a bay Percheron mare named Isabeau that I bought as a four month old weanling and imported from Canada. She is purebred, but unregistered due to her "oops" color (Percherons can sometimes crop out chestnut, bay and roan and unlike the American registry, the Canadian registry does not accept anything other than black or grey).
She is an awesome horse, I often trail ride her with 1 or 2 kids up with me. She takes care when she's cheuffering my kids around and won't go faster than a walk or slow jog, but if I'm riding by myself she is no plow horse! Isabeau is an energetic and fun trail horse, with great gaits and the smoothest trot I have ever ridden. She can out distance and out last some of my friends gaited horses on the trails in her smooth, comfy, floating-on-air trot. I have ridden her on many half day trail rides and one all day trail ride with no weariness in my bad knee.
She's the light type Percheron and is just 16 hands and weighs 1250 lbs, just about the same as a heavily muscled QH her height. A plus is the standard wide tree (FQHB in western) fits her perfectly so I don't have to be limited to the scant selection of draft tree saddles.
The other horse is a 7 year old palomino Mustang. He was originally adopted for my husband, but due to time restrictions at his work and my daughter bonding with him since she is always around riding and playing with him and training him tricks (like picking up a hat and handing it to her so she doesn't have to dismount to retrieve a fallen hat, lol), he has become my daughter's horse. He's a character and very intelligent, learning things quite fast.
I've ridden western most of my life, but after injuring my knee in an auto accident the western stirrup fenders bug my knee on long rides so my current saddle is a hornless Ausie style since they are such comfy saddles and the thin stirrup leathers don't stress my bad knee. Plus, without a horn, I can sit my babes in front of me over the pommel. ;-)
We trail ride our horses exclusively, but I would love to do cattle sorting, driving and maybe cowboy mounted shooting one of these years.
We board our horses down the street from our house, and I hope to someday move back to Oregon and find a place that we may keep our hourses on our own property.
