OK. So I own a 16.3hh TB mare. I have never had issues with her EVER! Anyone could ride her, even bareback with JUST a halter on! Recently she has become nearly uncontrollable!! She seems to sidestep if she wants to move forward and you want a slower pace she does this now. After trying to get her under control she seems to have a fit now! She has NEVER ignored any correction I have given her(Spinning, using more leg, reins, ect). I am at a COMPLETE LOSS as of what to do. I even started carrying a crop, at first this worked then again I had trouble. I have always trained my own horses, and been the person to train another persons uncontrollable horse when they become unmanageable. I'm not sure where I am going wrong here! Any help would be great!!!! Thank you!!!
Definately agree with the others...not sure where you are located but if it is an area there are ticks and lyme disease have her checked for that too. Lymes makes both people and animals a bit cranky.
My friend brought up the tooth thing. She is getting a bit older now(just turned 17). She said I may need to have her teeth done every 6mos now instead of once per year. So I have set up an apt with the vet, until then only a hack when I ride her IF I ride her at all. I am going to talk about when I should switch her over to senior feed too. I have her on joint supps. now but she may need more I am aware of.
I am pretty good about checking my birth and tack so I dont think its her back. Shes a pretty sturdy girl. Not showing any signs of being lame, or favoring a leg/hip/ect. So Hopefully its just a tooth issue I'm leaning towards.
Sturdiness doesn't really have anything to do with it, and there aren't usually signs of lameness if it's her back or neck in pain. She could have rolled and thrown something out of whack sometimes it isn't anything unusual that causes aches. If it's not her teeth I'd recommend a full vet check over and soundness test.
Thanks again everyone! The vet is coming out beginning of next week to do her teeth, and fully check her over! I appreciate everyone's information and help!
