A Jumping Clinic with a Grand Prix rider that trains at my barn. This was right before Maggie got injured but she's doing better now!

My horse just got her teeth floated this past weekend and the vet noticed an ulcer in her nose. She has always had really sensitive skin and gets sun burned in the summer. The outside of her nose actually isn't that sun burned compared to past years but I'm worried about the ulcer. She had it last summer as well and I didn't really think much of it.

1. Can ulcers go and come back? Last summer I didn't know what it was but I cleaned it and put medicine on it and it looked a lot better. Now it looks bad again.

2. Do I need to be worried it is skin cancer?

3. What else do you know about external ulcers/ ulcers in the nose?

For now I'm putting the long fly mask on her to keep it out of the sun (hopefully she'll keep it on...), cleaning it, and putting neosporin on it to try and heal it/ ease the pain.

If I put sunscreen on the outside of her nose it tends to make the burn worse, I guess because the skin starts to depend on it and since I board her, I can't go out there multiple times a day every day to reapply it.

The vet is coming to look at her but he'll be out of town until next week so now I have a whole week to sit here and worry.

I don't know about the ulcer, but for sunscreen, I use Zinc cream (diaper cream), apply a good layer and it lasts the day, easily.

never heard of outside ulcers, just stomach ones.
My horse had these little sores on the inside of his mouth, the vet said they were self inflicted..probably from him rubbing on things.
I know that bot flies can cause little sore like things on the inside of their lips, but not too sure about noses.

I use water proof, kid sunscreen for my horse. It seems to last a while.
I'd try the butt rash cream, since you can apply it thicker and it does stay on pretty darn well. We used it when my moms horse had a mild case of scratches in the winter/fall and that stuff stayed on until the next day.

Can you put a fly mask on her, the type that cover the nose? that might help? Did the vet give you anthing for the ulcer? I would think that he would have given you something for it or give you advice on what to do. Is there someplace shady (like a stall) that she can be in during the day? good luck
