Just sharing the importants of wearing a helmet when riding. I just learned when I had my horse stabled at another ranch for training, a renter at the barn where I was at, had an accident on her horse while she was piggy backing a little girl. I bought a riding helmet and she said told me she don't use one because she doesn't need too. I told her I'm a good rider but through out the past I've learned even experienced riders need to take safety precautions. Well she now learned what I meant but now is suffering from injurys to her head, ribs, and knee from a fall she took when her horse tripped while cantering. She can't remember ten days after the accident and developed a slight bleeding in her head that the doctors are trying to locate where. This happened in the beginning of July, till this day I wear my helmet with out feeling embarrassed I feel I wear it because I know things can happen when you leased expect and it's better to be prepared than learn the lesson too late. I hope that she gets well and that she learns from this....I pray she will heal and be able to ride again. As for now she is restricted from riding until further notice. Please wear your helmets when riding it can prevent serious injuries and save your life.
Good Choice on your part. I always wear a helmet when riding! We have a neighbor lady here that was an experienced horse person who never wore a helmet. She had a major fall and was in a coma for a long time. She now has permanent brain damage.
I should do it when I'm out just hand walking too. I've been smacked in the head and even knocked off my feet while on the ground. Horses are big and their heads are like solid bone when they swing it around to hit you.
Good for you! I always wear a helmet also. On monday a woman was riding in a park that I ride in a lot. No one knows for sure what happened, she was riding with a group and suddenly her horse took of in the opposite direction. A hiker found her on the ground and she was unconsious, they called 911 but when they arrived she was gone. From all the stories we have heard her horse was a very calm Quarter Horse who had never done anything remotely like this in the past. We will never now what spooked him or what happened. She was not wearing a helmet and died from massive head trauma, everyone says that if she was wearing a helmet whe would still be alive.
After reading your stories, I think that I should start wearing a helmet. I have a metal rod in my arm after the accident that happened some years back. I was lucky I still have my life. My next investment is going to be a helmet.
I too always wear my helmet! My 'bombproof' mare was cantering and she lost her footing and completely flipped I was lucky not to get a hoof to the head, and that made me quickly realize how fast things happen! I board at a barn with nearly 60 horses and I'm the only one that wears a helmet and I'm perfectly fine with that, better be safe than sorry :)
