That is a good question, I have always used the mineral blocks. A woman at my stable who studies nutrition told me that they may get minerals they do not need from the mineral block? so I am confused also.
I believe mineral blocks are the best all around. No grains or grasses have the complete nutrition alone therefore a mineral block supplements what the horse intakes. Key word is "supplement".
I give my horses a free choice of a mineral block, a selenium/e block, a cobalt block and a regular salt block - that way they can supplement all they need - and if they only need salt, they can have it on its own, without "over mineralising".
There is an old saying....."You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". In spite of all of your good intentions, your horse will eat what he is lacking in his diet, naturally. It is your job to provide him with what ever it may be that he needs. My best advise to you is to give him a choice. Some horses prefer the mineral block, & others the salt block. After a month or so of offering him both, he will let you know what his preferance is. I hope this helps
It depends where you live. In my area we have a lot of mineral in our water so for us just plain salt is better. But if your horse doesn't have access to minerals naturally then the mineral/salt block is probably better.
i give my two horses a choice in what they want they will go to the miniral for a little while then go to the salt block for considarably more time and it will continue like that untill they feel they have had enouph so i would give them bolth gust so they can have what they want and possably need anytime instead of waiting for you to switch it up
I switch up too i give my horses salt in the summer and mineral blocks in the winter{but not so much in between} I will also give my horse salt after a hard ride.so i think both are best.neither one is better for them.
