About This Video

To buy a custom-fit English horse saddle, buy a saddle from a tack shop that fits the horse and have a saddle fitter make alterations; or choose a saddle brand that makes custom fits, such as Antares. Have a custom saddle maker measure the horse and rider to get the perfect fit with advice from an equestrian team head coach in this video on equestrian supplies.

Note - these two mentioned saddle brands are excellent quality, however, they are usually made on wood trees. Remember that even though a saddler (or a trained sales person!) comes to your barn, your custom saddle is made from a single, static, set of measurements, but your horse will change its shape based on training, condition/illness, etc. Don't be surprised if the saddle you paid $4000 for doesn't fit even though it was "custom" made. Only minor changes can be made through flocking and panels, but if the tree, the underlying frame, becomes too narrow, you have to start over. For saddles that can be changed for the life of the horse, consider Saddlefit 4 Life or saddles built on Adaptrees.

When considering buying a custom fit saddle for your horse there are a few options. The first is to go to your local tax store and purchase a saddle that vaguely fits your horse and then hire a saddle fitter to come and make alterations to the saddle. The second way that you can go about buying a custom fit saddle is to choose a brand of saddle that will make custom fits. One brand if you're considering a jumping saddle is Antares saddles. And they will come out and they will take measurements of you and your horse and take it back with them to their shop and make the saddle for you, this is a more expensive route. If you're considering a dressage saddle this is one example, this is an Albion saddle, and also like the Antares they'll come out they will measure your horse and they will custom make a saddle for you. Once again this is a more expensive way to go about it, but these saddles tend to be the greatest quality and will probably last you a long time.
