Thoroughbreds must remain limber and ready for explosive action, and massage techniques to release tension in the lumbar region can restore the flexibility these animals need. Learn how to work on thoroughbreds in this video on equine kinesiology.
Hi, my name is Jennifer Oliver. I'm an Equine Massage Therapist and the benefit of equine massage in the Thoroughbred industry is that helps the brace horses to be fast and limber which really helps for that explosive movement and helps them have a longer endurance while they run and they won't get as tired as quickly. The, the, also, the biggest benefit is this that if a horse has an acute injury or something like that, you can get them back into the track faster using equine massage. Equine massage has a longer, a longer lasting benefits as oppose to you know, medicines or beaut or injecting; it really just helps those muscles be nice and supple and they really can run at their fullest. Thoroughbreds have a lot of tension built up in their lumbar region of their back and SI joint because when they run, they really fully extend those high legs and that puts a lot of tension there on that SI joint. But really, Thoroughbreds in general have a tendency to be tensed all over because they're so strong and so fit and you know, they really really work really hard. American Thoroughbreds have a tendency to be tensed left front, right hind because they're going you know, around the track.
