we bought recently a pony and it happened to be a Hackney. Here I have to say that's shes a great little horse with just the right amount of temperament and smart as well - patient with beginners especially children and demanding accuracy from more advanced riders :) The breed is not well know around here so I'm looking for more info on them.
As far as I know our mare was used as a regular pony (bit of a jumping career I've been told). As far as the high-stepped trot she does it when she's excited or agitated i.e. when we ride out thru a new trail.
I would love to work on showing it deliberately. On all the video I found (not that many of them) I see riders with they leg on from, sitting at the rear of a saddle and hands held high - I wonder if that's a specific way of riding Hackneys or is it just that they are more of a western style riders.
