About This Video

Training on an Equicizer will depend on whether the training is for being an exercise horse rider or a jockey. Exercise riders work to control and slow a horse down for controlled speed. Find out how jockeys will be closer to the horse, and therefore train differently, with information from a former professional jockey in this free video on horse riding.

I'd like to explain some of the differences between the skills of what it takes to be a jockey and the skills of what it takes to be an exercise rider and why they are so different. Basically in simplest terms a jockey's job is to make horses go fast or as fast as they can. Where an exercise rider it's just the opposite, their skills are to slow a horse down and to have them exercise in a more slow control manner. So just to give you an example of a couple of different positions that might be completely different and different muscle groups that an exercise rider would do opposed to a jockey would be simply an exercise rider would be more reserved, would be his, would be higher out of the saddle. This gives him leverage to use his hands and his legs to maintain a controlled speed with their horse. And to get them to exercise the way they want them to. A jockey on the other hand, a jockey is closer to the horse and they are pushing forward in the horse's stride. So they are, they are actually encouraging, they are helping that horse to move along faster and better so you can see where it's completely opposite between the two of them. Now I would like to add besides just the physical aspect between the two of them there's also a mental aspect. As far as an exercise rider to be a good exercise rider, there's a lot of skills mentally. A good set of hands being light on a horse's mouth. Not getting into a fight with your horse. Some of these things to get them trained in a nice and controlled manner where they are carrying their head properly and they are not over extending themselves. They are not swinging their heads around so those are some things that are very important crucial part of being a good exercise rider. So there's two differences right away, the difference between a jockey and an exercise rider.
