Jockeys riding in horse races are at risk of breaking bones and being critically injured or even killed during every race or training session. Understand the risks before becoming a jockey with information from a former professional jockey in this free video on horse racing.
Hi, I'm Frank Lovato Jr, and I am a professional jockey. I want to mention that some of the risks of being a thoroughbred horse jockey, of course, the obvious it's a very dangerous sport. There are jockeys that are killed, critically injured, and often injured - all different levels of injuries - every year. So this is something that if you feel like you want to be a jockey and this is something you really want to do - then you really should know that the risks are there. I personally - I rode professionally for twenty-five years, I was a very fortunate - as far as in that time frame I've only broken a few bones. My father was also a jockey. I believe he broke approximately twenty-two bones. That's a lot of injuries, that's a lot of falls, there's - it's a very dangerous sport. There's no seatbelt out there. You're running - horses run thirty-five, forty miles an hour. And with barely any equipment - any safety equipment - other than a helmet, a vest, so if this is something you're considering, really know that there is a lot of risks involved as a jockey or exercise rider, you're going to get injuries, it's just a part of the business, and I just want you to understand that.
