Jockeys do not have to meet any height requirements to race horses, but there are weight restrictions that make being shorter more beneficial for most jockeys. Find out how racing horses is more about weight that height with information from a former professional jockey in this free video on jockeys.
Hi, so often people will ask me the question, 'I'm too tall to be a jockey, aren't I?' And I kind of find that it's a very funny question because there is no height restrictions as far as being a jockey. It's all based on weight. So you could be six foot tall, if you could make the weights, you can be a jockey. And as far as height has nothing to do with it. I personally, I'm only five foot tall, and I was one of the heavier jockeys, so I had to reduce and fight my weight pretty hard to make my assigned weights. I've got a good friend that's five foot seven, that can eat whatever he wants, so it's one of those questions that height has nothing to do with it, it's all about the weight.
