Most of the horse breeds used in dressage are imported from Europe, but many different breeds can be used based on the rider's preference. Learn about differences between Holsteiner and Oldenburg horses with helpful advice in this video on horse training and dressage.
The breeds that we like to use in the sport of dressage vary, very much. One thing that is very common is that most of the horses are imported from Europe. A lot of them come from Germany and Holland, those are- and probably Denmark, those are the three main countries that you would import a lot of the different breeds from. We like to have warm bloods that we like to use for dressage. So Amacelli specifically is a Holsteiner, he is- that's a part in Germany, an area called Holstein where he comes from. Also, Holsteiners are used for jumping, but definitely dressage as well. We also have different breeds, the Dutch breed, the Oldenburg's, Hanoverians, many different breeds that are definitely useful for dressage. And there are also many different breeds like thoroughbreds that can be used for, or are used for racing that can also be very suitable. Actually most of the warm bloods now and days have a lot of thoroughbred in their blood lines because they're a hotter horse and we want that kind of feistiness for the sport of dressage. So we definitely can use many different breeds, depending on which breed you like more than one than another, they all vary, very much. And their sizes, colors, conformation are generally also very different, different genders, some people prefer stallions over geldings over mare's. So it's definitely what you prefer. And in this case we have many different breeds in our barn at the moment, we've got Holsteiners, Oldenburg, we have Danish horses, so I think a good horse is a good horse, and it doesn't have to be just one particular breed, they all have their pros and cons, and we enjoy riding all of them.
