To clean a minor wound you have a few different options. You may choose to use a mild soap like Ivory and water and rinse the wound out, or you may choose just to use alcohol. Either way you apply it with gauze squares. After cleaning the wound thoroughly and removing any remaining debris a topical ointment may be necessary to keep bugs out and promote healing. Examples of topicals that are safe for a horse's skin would be Derma Gel or Furizone. Very rarely do minor wounds need to be wrapped and covered so once a day or twice a day depending on the drainage of the wound would be good to clean and reapply ointment. If your horse's wound is not healing and you notice any heat call your vet immediately.
