Lunging a horse enhances the rider's and the horse's communication between each other, and it serves as a great warm up before more intense exercises. Understand the principles behind lunging with riding information from an internationally-certified horse trainer and instructor in this video on horse lunging.
Hello, my name is Rebekah Larimer and I am an internationally certified horse trainer and instructor. And today I'm going to tell you about lunging a horse. Lunging is to enhance both your and your horse's communication, to be able to prepare them for walk, trot and canter and also to build, to be able to build the horses muscles up to prepare for the rider on their back. Maria, behind me with John, is lunging John around her. Maria's in the center, asking him to walk around. We can also ask him to trot, canter, on cue and command, to be able to enhance both of their communication. Maria has a lunge line in her hand, it's basically a long lead rope, to be able to allow John to go on a larger circle around her.
