For a lunge lesson, the necessary equipment for the horse includes side reins, a snaffle bit, a properly-fitting saddle and leg protection. Gather the basic riding tack for lunging with riding information from an internationally-certified horse trainer and instructor in this video on horse lunging.
Hello, my name is Rebekah Larimer and I am an internationally certified horse trainer and instructor and today I'm going to tell you about the equipment that you need for your horse during a lunge lesson. First off, we need the lunge line, which is basically a nice long rope that you can get at any tack store. And then you have the horse's bridle and you'll find that much of the equipment that we use for a lunge lesson is the same exact stuff that you're going to use while riding. If you're going to use the side reins, I do recommend a snaffle bit. And these are the side reins, and they hook directly from the saddle. I do recommend having it up from the, the top using the D-rings or a D-ring keeper. You will see others using the side reins down here, around, lower, down at the girth area, it's really up to your personal preference. And then the side reins will hook directly to the bridle, like that, below the rein. Also I do recommend that you have your saddle with the stirrups at the proper length for your individual rider. Definitely having the girth, at the proper fit, tightness and also have leg protection for your horse. It's similar to a helmet for a rider, it's just preventive maintenance to make sure that your horse, if they accidentally hit it, if they hit their legs against each other, that they're not going to get any scrapes or cuts or any of that. But those are optional as well. And so this is the equipment that I recommend during a lunge lesson.
