Standing in irons is a term used to describe the proper sitting position while horseback riding, which requires the legs to be underneath the body, the back to be straight and heel to line up with the vertical of her back and shoulders. Assume the proper seat on a horse with riding information from an internationally-certified horse trainer and instructor in this video on horse lunging.
Hello, my name is Rebekah Larimer, I am an internationally certified horse trainer and instructor and today I'm going to show you the usefulness of being able to stand in your irons. Today, I have my assistant, Rosemary, who is purposefully sitting incorrectly for us. Her legs are too far forward and she's back behind the vertical. So Rosemary, if you can please stand in your irons. And notice how her legs automatically come underneath her to be able to balance for standing in the irons. Now she's going to sit down in the saddle while keeping the, from her lower leg, from her knee down, the same. And her leg stays nice and her, she has a nice line from her ear, through her shoulder, through her, through the point of her hip, down to the back of her heel. And this is benefit of standing in your irons to create that position that we all desire.
