In polo, there are four chukkas, or quarters, within each game, and each quarter consists of seven and a half minutes of play. Find out how polo players can changes their ponies after each quarter with help from the secretary of a polo club in this free video on polo periods of play.
Good afternoon, I'm Cyrus Confectioner, secretary of Calcutta Polo Club, one of the oldest institutions for polo in the world. I am now going to give you a brief on the periods of play. Now coming to the gym in general there are four chukkas, that means there are four quarters in this game. Each quarter consisting of seven and a half minutes of play. That means there are four quarters, seven and a half minutes with a gap in between. The game is played at a very fast pace and obviously the polo ponies get very tired, sometimes even small injuries. Therefore each player if they want they are allowed to change their polo ponies at the end of each quarter. These quarters are known in polo as chukkas or chukkas, it is basically the period of play for one quarter of a polo game. Now the idea of the game is very simple. There are four players on each team mounted on four polo ponies and the idea is to hit the ball, that wooden ball in between the goal posts so as to score the goals. That's the simple basics of the game. Thank you.
