A full-cheek bit has long shanks on either side that help to better control steering the horse. Find out how to attach a full-cheek bit to a bridle with help from the owner of an English tack store in this video on horse supplies.
Hi! I'm Tori Johnson with The Leading Rein and today we're going to talk a little bit about the different types of bits. Right now what I'm holding is a full cheek. They call it a full cheek because it has long shanks that go all the way down the cheek of the horse on each side of its mouth. These bits are really good. They help stirring a little bit better plus it's just a really nice overall bit for everyday riding and showing. The leather pieces on the bit are called bit keepers. When you're using a full cheek bit, you want to make sure that these parts of the bit are staying upright like this. And you don't want them hanging down low. These parts of the keeper connect to the bit on your bridle. So when you're putting your bridle together, you would stick those through there and connect it. So when you're riding the bit stays upright like it's supposed to.
