When inspecting a used saddle for wear, look for large scrapes and gashes, loose stitching and cracks in the leather. Find a used saddle in safe and usable condition with help from the owner of an English tack store in this video on horse supplies.
Hi! I'm Tori with The Leading Rein and today we're going to look at saddles, and look at the wear and tear on some of 'em. And pick a good one to want that you probably would want to buy if you're buying a used one. As you can see, this saddle is pretty old and it has a very big crack, and the stitching is coming apart. It has cracks in the leather and it has nicks and cuts everywhere up here. And the stitching up here is also coming apart and you can see the tree of the saddle starting to come. So everything on this saddle is really just falling apart. So it would not be a safe saddle for anybody to ride in. The belts are actually still in pretty good condition. That's about the only thing on this saddle that's not worn out. So this is definitely one that you would not want to put anybody in because it's just not safe. This saddle here is also a used saddle. But the previous saddle but you can tell that it's not nearly as worn. It does still have a little bit of wear across the cantle but the stitching is still in very good shape, nothing is coming apart here. You don't have hardly any marks on the saddle and again, the belts are still in excellent condition. And everything is still in working order and it would still be an extremely safe saddle. And you wouldn't have to do any repairs in order to take this out and ride in it today. And this next saddle is a brand new saddle. So as you can see everything should be perfect. The stitching is perfect, there's no wear marks from the stirrups, and the belts have never been used. There's no girth marks, any sort of marking at all, still very stiff. So the only thing that you would need to do to this saddle would be to oil it and break it in a little bit better in order to make it usable to where it's still comfortable. But it's in very good condition and nothing is wrong with this. So there's nor wear marks or anything that would cause any problems.
