When fitting bell boots on a horse, be sure the rubber boot covers the entire hoof and back part of the shoe to prevent injury. Understand the purpose of bell boots on a horse with help from the owner of an English tack store in this video on horse supplies.
Hi. I'm Tori Johnson with The Leading Rein and I'm going to show you how to fit a bell boot. A bell boot is usually a rubber boot that goes around the horse's hoof to one, prevent them from hurting their hoof if they're jumping and two to prevent them from pulling their shoe off in the back. When you put a bell boot on, you want it to be able to come down. So this bell boot would be too small for this horse because it doesn't come down far enough on his hoof and it's a little bit light up around his pastern. This is a bigger size bell boot. And as you can see it goes down and actually covers his hoof. And it protects the back part where the shoe would be so he couldn't step on it with his hind leg and rip his shoe off. So this is a really good fit and a lot of people use these for jumping or very long trail rides, things like that just to protect their horses feet from injury and so on.
