Hi I'm Teri Carter from Saddlebrook Stables in Castle Hayne, North Carolina and I'm going to talk to you today about what you need to start barrel racing. The first item you need of course is a horse and one that is basically applicable to this sport. You also need a saddle, a barrel saddle is optimum. That's a saddle that the panels in the back are rounded or a little shorter than your normal stock saddle. The other thing you need would be a bridal to control your horse and the bit that you would use would depend on the amount of control that you want for your horse. Other optional equipment that you want for barrel racing would be splint boots. They protect your horse's front legs from either hitting the barrels or hitting each other. The rider can also wear spurs. Those are worn on the back of the boot to get your horse to go faster or to help them turn better. Some horses and riders use a crop or a quirt. That is to help the horse go faster or to help it turn better. Those are the things that you need to barrel race.
