Horse etiquette is always a good idea when you are competing in order to ensure they safety of everyone, including the horses. Teach your horse proper etiquette with help from a horseback riding instructor in this video on barrel racing.
Hi, I'm Teri Carter of Saddlebrook Stables in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Today I'm going to talk to you about horse etiquette for barrel racing. It's always a good idea to make sure that your horse is well-mannered, especially when you're going to be in competition around other horses, so nobody gets hurt--either you or your horse. One of the first things you need to do is to make sure that your horse listens to you. If you are competing in gaming within a ring, you're going to need to enter the ring before you make your run and exit the ring after you make your run. It is important that your horse enter and exit at the walk and not run in and out of the gate. If you are doing rodeo style gaming, the horses are allowed to run and out of the arena. It is also important then to make sure your horse can stop and that he's listening to you, so that you don't hit other riders and jeopardize them, whether they're on the other side of the fence, outside of the gate, or whether they're on either side of the alleyway that you run in and out of if you're doing rodeo style barrel racing. It's also a good idea not to run your horse flat out for every single barrel pattern or gaming pattern that you do. This just teaches the horse that he's going to go as fast as he can every time he enters the arena, and soon he may become uncontrollable every time you put him in the arena. That is the etiquette for barrel racing.
