A rollback is a maneuver that is used to help gain control of your horse as far as achieving leads. Practice doing a rollback correctly with tips from a horseback riding instructor in this video on barrel racing.
Hi, I'm Teri Carter of Saddlebrook Stables in Castle Hayne, North Carolina, and I'm going to talk to you today about how to do a rollback. There's a couple of different ways that you can do a rollback, and this maneuver is used to help gain control of your horse as far as achieving your leads on your horse, and it's also a maneuver used in a reining pattern. If you were going to use this maneuver in a reining pattern, you usually would come to a stop and then bring the horse's whole front end around to the right or the left, and then take off on either the right or the left lead, depending on which direction you're turning. If you're using this move as a correctional move, or a way to help your horse achieve the correct lead, you would want to stop and you would want to pull the horse's nose to the right or to the left, depending on which lead that you are trying to achieve, and then you would want to move forward on that particular lead. This is a good foundational move to have. It is also a good thing for your horse to know. It helps keep them clean in their legs, and it helps them know which lead to use, especially when you cue with your legs. And this is how to do a roll back.
