A horse grooming kit should have a hard brush, a medium bristle brush, a soft bristle brush, a curry comb, a hoof pick and a mane and tail comb. Find out how to use horse grooming supplies with help from a horse riding teacher in this free video on horse grooming.
This is Maggie Connolly with Hawthorne Stables and we're going to talk about what the elements of a good groom kit contain. First for me, I like to have three types of brushes. I like to have a hard brush, a hard bristle brush, a medium bristle brush and a soft bristle brush. A curry comb, a hoof pick and then a mane and tail comb are your basic essentials for a good groom kit. When you start with the brushing elements of a horse the first thing to do is to grab a curry comb. This is a standard curry comb, looks like this, then hard brush. The hard brush will take the hard bristles and will take the hair that the, has been moved around with the curry comb and actually the hard bristle brush is designed to go ahead and line the hairs back up. Then the next one I'd like to do to help remove some of the dust is go to a medium bristle brush and then to just soften and kind of give the glossy part of the coat with the soft bristle brush. I like to use for the mane and tail a thick tooth comb. This way it helps when there is knots in the tail that you don't end up pulling the tail hairs out. It helps to flow through the tail a little bit smoother so I like to use a thick comb and then your standard hoof pick utilized to pick feet. Another component of a groom box that I like especially in Florida because we have here the ground is really wet and we are on coral rock and it's really hard on a horse's foot so a nice sealant protector, water proof sealant for a hoof is a component of any great groom box. Of course these are just the basic components of a good groom box. We can elaborate on many types of products and things that are out there but these are the basic essentials for a great groom box.
