This is Maggie Connolly with Hawthorne Stables and we're going to go over how to ask for a horse's foot. There are many reasons that you may need to look at a horse's foot. Perhaps I mean obviously just to pick it before you ride, but you may also realize that you need to pick it after you ride or you may want to look to see if there isn't perhaps a piece in it or if a horse is showing obviously lameness in a foot you may want to look at the foot to make sure that there is nothing there that's been hurt or that there is anything that is stuck in the foot that can cause a lameness. So many techniques on ways to ask a horse to lift up his foot. To me it's imperative that you not throw the horse off balance when you're asking for the horse's foot. There is a kind way to ask for a horse to lift its leg and give it's foot to you. So what I do is I come back here, rub my leg all the way down here, let the horse know what it is that you're doing and where you're going and then simply just ask for the foot and this is a couple of great techniques on asking a horse to give you its foot.
