When jumping horses, a splint boot can be used for protection in times in which a horse missteps or overreaches itself. Find out how to apply a splint boot correctly with help from a horse riding teacher in this free video on splint boots for horses.
This is Maggie Connolly with Hawthorne Stables and this is a splint boot. When jumping horses, I prefer to use a splint boot for protection 'cause you just never know when a horse is going to misstep or overreach itself and can perhaps injure itself. So I always want to make sure that my horse's front legs, when doing any type of exercise, are protected, whether it be with a polo wrap or it be with a splint boot, and I'll show you how to apply a splint boot correctly. Then what I do is I always, even though I groom my horse efficiently, just run my hand down the legs there just to make sure there isn't any loose dirt or anything that I may have not picked up there. Then you can take the splint boot and just slide it right on down the leg and then you'll see how it just fits right in that pocket there in the design of the splint boot. Then you just pull the straps over making sure that it's snug and it's not too tight and then you can put the other Velcro in place. On splint boots that do have three strips, what I do is I'll take the middle strip and apply the middle strip first and then go ahead and do the bottom and then do the top, that way the middle one has a tendency to anchor the boot in place and then you can fit it snuggly and securely. That's how you apply a splint boot. This is Maggie Connolly with Hawthorn Stables.
