Feeding horses is all about discovering the tastes of the individual horse, but the use of the horse will also inform the amount and type of food that the horse gets. Keep a horse at a healthy weight and energy level with help from a horse riding teacher in this free video on feeding a horse.
This is Maggie Connolly with Hawthorne Stables and we're going to talk a little bit on how to feed your horse. There are many different types of grains and a variety of different grain types and distributors. To find the correct food for your horse obviously is indicative of number one, the horse's taste. Is the horse actually going to eat the type of food that it is but also the type of competition or the type of work performance level that your horse is doing is going to be indicative not only to how much food the horse gets but what type of food that the horse gets. You want to make sure that your food is going to be, is going to keep your horse at a healthy weight and at a healthy energy level and is indicative of what it is that the horse's nutritional needs are. You can add some foods and add supplements to them. I like to use a complete food, one that all my horses are in competition so I like to have foods that are set up for horses that are in competition. I don't like to overdo carbohydrates or overdo proteins but to just provide the horse with enough nutrition so that it has the energy to complete the job that has to be done. As I said there are many different types of food at many different levels and if you have to I would consult your veterinarian on the type of food that would be best suited for your horse's nutritional needs.
