The best advice when looking for horse breeds for beginners is to look at quarter horses and paint horses. Determine what horse breed best suits your child with advice from a Certified Horsemanship Association instructor in this video on beginning horseback riding.
Hi my name is Maryjo Turnbull and I'm here at Silver Buckle Ranch in Brush Prairie, Washington. Today I wanted to take some time and talk to you a little bit about horse breeds that are best suited for young children for riding lessons or to have a horse at home. There are a lot of different breeds of horses in the world. The most common of course as everyone knows is the quarter horse. My best advice for looking for a horse breed that best focuses on the child would be quarter horses and paint horses. They offer a lot of versatility, a lot of different sizes. You can start with smaller quarter ponies and then go up to horses that are pretty big so up to 16 hand horses. The versatility in them is that they are great horses for western riding, English riding, rodeo events, great horses for any kind of competition. They are hardy horses. They are generally easy to keep than some of the other breeds. They also have great temperaments on the most part. As a generalization when choosing a horse for your child the temperament is the number one thing you want to think about as well as if the training of the horse best suits the goals of the child. So again if I were to pick breeds that were best suited for lesson horses or for youth to have at home it would be quarter horses and paint horses.
