Solid Appaloosa horses are used for English and jumping, due to being long-legged and tall. Learn the distinctions of solid appaloosa horses from a horseback riding instructor in this video on horse breeds.
Hi, I am Teri Carter of Saddlebrook Stables in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. And today we are going to talk to you about the solid appaloosa. I have here a solid appaloosa mare; she has no distinct appaloosa typical characteristics, such as a blanket or spots. This particular mare is used for English and jumping, because she is long-legged and tall. The way that the appaloosa gained some non-spotted horses within the industry is people wanted to bring other characteristics of other breeds into the appaloosa. So, what they did was they started crossbreeding with quarter horses and different breeds to bring characteristics into the appaloosa breed. This is called certified pedigree option, or CPO. You can register your solid appaloosa or CPO then with the industry if you have two registered parents. One of the parents has to be a registered appaloosa, the other parent has to be a register of the other breed that you are breeding to. And that is the story of the solid appaloosa.
